We're looking for a technical, hands-on, and infrastructure-minded Engineering Manager to lead our Notifications team within the Growth organization. Notifications is a full-stack team owning the platform and infrastructure that powers every notification Discord sends, the orchestration layer that optimizes notifications globally across types, the in-app notifications center, and the user-facing settings and client experience. You will lead a team of full-stack engineers operating business-critical systems that fan out to hundreds of millions of users while shipping the re-engagement surfaces that bring them back. This role reports to the Senior Engineering Manager of Growth. What You'll Be Doing • Lead a team of full-stack engineers building and operating the notifications platform — Elixir services, Python backends, pubsub pipelines, and the Kubernetes infrastructure underneath them • Set technical direction for notifications infrastructure and ensure systems scale reliably as volume and complexity grow • Partner with Product, Design, Data Science, and Marketing to define and execute the notifications roadmap • Use experimentation and metrics to drive continuous improvement in notification engagement, retention, and long-term user trust • Build a high-performing team through hiring, coaching, and instilling engineering best practices • Partner with platform consumers across Discord to evolve the primitives other teams depend on to reach our users • Partner with engineering leadership on strategic planning and organizational improvement What you should have • 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, with significant time building and operating backend or infrastructure systems at scale • 2+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager • Comfort owning production systems built on technologies like Elixir, Python, pubsub/streaming pipelines, and Kubernetes, with strong intuition for reliability, throughput, and cost at scale • Experience collaborating closely with product managers, designers, data scientists, and other engineers to define and ship solutions • A track record of growing engineers and helping team members succeed • Strong ownership mindset — you stay close to the technical decisions your team makes and can discuss them in depth with anyone at Discord • Ability to drive a culture of 80/20 thinking, fast iteration, and high-quality delivery Bonus points • Experience leading teams that own shared platforms or primitives consumed by other engineering teams • Experience shipping push notifications or other re-engagement systems at consumer scale, including familiarity with deliverability, throttling, and policy considerations • Full-stack experience across both frontend and backend development • Strong track record of driving measurable impact through experimentation and data-driven decision making • Demonstrated success driving engagement and long-term retention through messaging or re-engagement surfaces • You understand the gaming industry • You're a Discord user and understand the core features and flow of Discord communications The base salary range for this full-time position is listed below. What you'll do Join an engineering team designing and implementing full-stack, user-facing security solutions that protect hundreds of millions of Discord users. Lead full-stack work to strengthen session security and authentication for Discord’s users. Improve, operate, and maintain security-critical authentication services, owning their correctness and security. Partner with Product teams to drive adoption of stronger authentication and to ship user-facing account security tools. Identify and design solutions for emerging threats to user account security. Research and implement new security capabilities for the Discord platform, staying current on the authentication and session security landscape. Build security controls and tools that emphasize self-service, automation, and performance to help identify and mitigate account security flaws. Who you are You have 5+ years of experience securing production applications. You have 3+ years of experience programming in at least one general-purpose programming language (e.g., Python, Go, Java, or Rust). You have hands-on experience building and shipping production software, including security features, controls, frameworks, or guardrails. You have hands-on experience with authentication and account security, such as WebAuthn, passkeys, FIDO2, MFA, and session management. You are comfortable reasoning about the security of complex systems, even if they contain components you aren’t familiar with, and can give engineers clear, sound guidance on secure design and implementation. You have experience leading security projects with a cross-functional group. You have experience building or hardening client applications, such as desktop or native mobile apps. You have experience operating in cloud-based environments (we use Google Cloud, but experience with other platforms is okay too). Bonus points Experience programming in at least one systems programming language (e.g. C, C++). Experience developing, operating, and debugging production systems. Familiarity with common application vulnerabilities on the platforms Discord ships on (that's all of them). This position is West Coast (U.S.) based and can be remote but if you live in the Bay Area, you’re welcome to work from our beautiful SF office. What you should have You have 7+ years of experience as a full-stack SWE You have built internal tools, and are familiar with A/B testing and statistical frameworks. You have experience with experimentation tooling; experience building core parts of experimentation platforms from scratch is a huge plus. You have extensive experience leading complex technical projects with successful outcomes; you can take a high-level goal and achieve a shippable solution You have built systems with strong data governance controls that respect privacy and security principles. You are proficient in Python and SQL. Experience with Typescript or Rust is a plus. Experience and with and/or exposure to a variety of datastores (relational, NoSQL, data warehouse solutions) Strong product sense and communication skills - you understand your customers and work well cross-functionally. A track record of developing engineers at multiple levels, and a habit of tracking industry trends to bring new techniques to technical problems. Bonus Points Experience building human-in-the-loop AI systems and AI product evaluation. Experience with cloud-computing platforms such as Google Cloud Platform or AWS. Experience with modern data processing stacks. Full-stack development or product engineering experience. Deep understanding of statistics, data science, or large scale data processing.
