Director of Data Engineering

Role Description The Director of Data Engineering is a full-time remote role responsible for leading the design, development, and maintenance of scalable data platforms and pipelines. This role oversees data engineering teams, sets technical direction, and ensures best practices for data architecture, governance, and reliability. The Director collaborates closely with product, analytics, and software engineering stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust data solutions that support reporting, machine learning, and real-time applications. Daily responsibilities include managing project delivery, reviewing solution designs and code, optimizing performance and costs, and establishing standards for data quality, documentation, and security. This leader also mentors team members, supports hiring and onboarding, and continuously evaluates tools and technologies to improve the data ecosystem. Qualifications Candidates should possess strong Engineering Management and Team Leadership skills to guide data engineering teams, foster collaboration, and drive performance.Candidates should possess practical Software Development experience, including building data pipelines, services, and integrations using modern programming languages and frameworks.Candidates should possess solid Project Management skills to plan, prioritize, and deliver complex data initiatives on time and within scope.Candidates should possess Integration experience, including working with APIs, ETL/ELT tools, cloud data platforms, and third-party data sources.Candidates should possess expertise in data architecture, data modeling, and database technologies (e.g., SQL/NoSQL, data warehouses, and data lakes).Candidates should possess experience with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP) and modern data tooling (e.g., Spark, Kafka, Airflow, dbt or similar).Candidates should possess strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.Candidates should possess a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
