Senior Python Backend Engineer

One of South Africa's leading e-commerce and delivery platforms is looking for a highly talented Senior Python Backend Engineer to join an innovative engineering team. Purpose of Role:Architect and develop scalable, reliable, and efficient systems that handle millions of transactions and solve complex technical challenges at scale. Design and maintain secure, scalable APIs and distributed backend systems that fuel high-volume customer experiences, leveraging cutting-edge technologies including event streaming, containerised microservices, and cloud-native solutions. Key Responsibilities:Architect and develop systems that handle millions of transactions and directly impact millions of users Design and maintain secure, scalable APIs that power the platform Develop distributed backend systems with stateless architectures Work with event streaming technologies to enable real-time data processing Build and maintain containerised microservices using modern orchestration tools Develop cloud-native solutions leveraging cloud service providers Explore new technologies and implement innovative patterns to solve complex technical challenges Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact features and improvements Continuously improve system reliability, performance, and scalability Minimum Required Qualification and Experience:Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field, OR equivalent practical experience Minimum 5 to 10+ years of hands-on software development experience Thorough understanding of computer science fundamentals, object-oriented concepts, data structures, and algorithms Strong Python programming expertise and proficiency in Unix/Linux environments Experience developing distributed backend systems and stateless architectures Proven ability to design and maintain secure and scalable APIs Hands-on experience with event streaming technologies Experience with relational and non-relational datastores Experience with containerisation technologies and cloud service providers Attributes:Passion for learning new skills and technologies Appreciation for inventing and simplifying complex solutions Love for solving complex technical problems at scale Drive to continuously improve both personal craft and systems Strong collaboration skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams Results-driven mindset with focus on delivering high-impact work Nice to Have:Experience with AWS cloud technologies for scalable, cloud-native solutions Proficiency with Git version control for collaborative development Experience with PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, and Redis Hands-on experience with Kafka for real-time data processing Experience with Docker and Kubernetes for container orchestration and management
